UUSC-UUA JustWorks Youth Delegation to Haiti – Bon Voyage!

We all felt the pain from the 2010 Haiti earthquake. While we did not feel the tremors or aftershocks, the photos of starving children stared at us from front pages all over the US. In most natural disasters, we might feel affected but it is easy to remain detached; places like Japan or Thailand feel a world away. Both are over six thousand miles away. Yet, when the 7.0 earthquake devastated Haiti, it was close to home. Haiti is only six hundred miles away from Miami. While the cataclysmic earthquake occurred over a year and a half ago, Haitians are still struggling to put their lives back together.

The UUSC-UUA JustWorks Youth Delegation has developed a way for Youth to get involved and help rebuild Haiti. They are taking youth ages 15 to 23 (as well as some adults) to build an eco-village and a sustainable community in Central Plateau, Haiti from August 20 to 27. Participants will construct homes for forty displaced families. They will also instruct citizens on positive, sustainable agriculture habits.

The trip costs four hundred dollars and covers all in-country costs. Participants are to pay for vaccinations and travel to Haiti. The deadline to apply was July 10. We look forward to hearing more about their travels and encourage our Envoys to keep an eye out for similar opportunities for Youth in their congregations.
