Movement on the Ugandan “Anti-Homosexuality Bill”

From Jim Burroway at The Box Turtle Bulletin:

The Sunday Monitor, Uganda’s largest independent newspaper, has apparently gotten a copy of the report by the Ugandan Cabinet committee tasked with reviewing the draconian Anti-Homosexuality Bill. According to the Monitor, the committee recommends deflecting attention to the bill by changing its title and/or combining it with the Sexual Offences Act.

TheCall Ministries from USA Intends to Fuel Homophobia in Uganda

URGENT CALL TO ACTION:

STOP THECALL MINISTRIES FROM FUELING HOMOPHOBIA IN UGANDA THROUGH THEIR MAY 2, 2010, CRUSADE

22.04.2010

Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) condemns Lou Engle’s upcoming crusade scheduled for May 2, 2010.  The crusade could cause incalculable damage, as it is designed to label homosexuality as a “vice” in Uganda and to incite people to “fight” against this “vice” in society.  In the context of an already inflamed extremist religious movement against homosexuality in Uganda sparked off by American evangelicals, the inflammatory preaching of Lou Engle and his associates is likely to incite further violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people in Uganda.

Stop TheCall to Violence in Uganda!

Another preacher from the United States is headed for Uganda to export hatred of gays. Lou Engle of Kansas City, Missouri wants to fill a stadium in Kampala on May 2 to shout about God’s wrath and punishment.  He calls it love – we call it spiritual violence. Join the campaign.

20th April 2010

Dear Madam,

On behalf of Spectrum Uganda in conjunction with Edoboozi Human Rights Defenders Network, we have learnt about your call for a prayer meeting next month taking place in Kampala by TheCall ministries international.

We recognize that morals are part and parcel of any organized society and that freedom of worship is granted by the constitution of Uganda.

However it’s within the same spirit that sexual minorities must be protected as prescribed in the protection of human rights.

Therefore you should not spearhead hate campaigns in the name of faith against same sex relations in the guise of protection of family values and morals in Uganda when you mention homosexuality as one of the vices you fight.

Therefore we call upon the organizers to desist from promoting discriminating tendencies and social injustice meted out on sexual minorities which is common occurrence and to recognize freedom of association and expression in flourishing civil society.

Yours

Public Relations Officer

HUMAN RIGHTS AND SOCIAL WORK IN UGANDA

‘The proposals before the Ugandan Parliament concerning homosexuality and gay rights are a violation of international human rights conventions and should be withdrawn’, said Dr David N Jones, President of the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW), as he prepared for the annual United Nations Social Work Day in New York.  He was supporting statements already made by UN global leaders and eminent human rights spokespeople.

Pride+Love in Uganda 06: What is our obligation to LGBT Ugandans?

Like the Jews, the LGBT community in Uganda is a global minority, a family, a tribe. When one part of the community is under threat of state and extra-judicial violence as we witnessed here in Uganda, the global LGBT community is called to act. What we do should be directed by the Ugandan LGBT community, but all the LGBT citizens of Uganda we saw, in the hundreds, asked for international support.

In proposing to imprison LGBTs, their friends, families, doctors, and teachers, the UN Member State of Uganda threatens to be in violation of multiple treaties. If the anti-homosexuality bill should pass, all treaties and UN instruments related to sexual violence, violence against minorities, human rights, human rights defenders and others will be violated by this bill. Under “The Responsibility to Protect,” the Member State of Uganda will be in violation. Under RTP, a Member State is bound by the UN to protect vulnerable populations, not to rid themselves of a minority.
