As the International Year of Youth comes to a close, we are still learning that youth can make a difference. That is why, on July 22 from 1 to 4 PM, the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Services (IUAES) and the Manhattan Multicultural Summer Youth Program (MMSY) are hosting an event titled “Youth Interface Dialogue & Mutual Understanding.” The meeting will emphasize “the importance of religious and cultural tolerance anchored on mutual understanding.”
Held in the UNICEF building on 44th between 1st and 2nd Ave., it will feature influential guest speakers such as Mr. Jeremy Gilly, Founder of “Peace One Day” and The UN International Day of Peace. In addition to an impressive panel, the event will feature interfaith dialogue from a youth perspective.
The event is open to the public. To register, fill out this application or call (212) 388-8191 for more information.

On August 11, AllyKatzz, a premier media company for tween- teen girls, will hold the UN International Year of Youth Culmination Celebration. The event will be held at the United Nations from 10 AM to 5 PM and will be hosted by UN Youth Champion Monique Coleman (most know her as an actress from the High School Musical franchise). Celebrating the end of the first International Year of Youth in twenty-five years, the event will host one hundred and ninety two teen girls, who will be delegates at the celebration, which includes a press conference.
If you are between the ages of 11 and 24 and interested in participating as a delegate in the August 11th celebration, click here for an application. This is an amazing opportunity for young women to speak their minds about important issues — and be heard.
On December 18, 2009, the UN General Assembly concluded that the year starting on August 12, 2010, would be the International Year of Youth: Dialogue & Mutual Understanding. Now that year is almost over and many events have been held, giving young people a voice at the UN concerning causes such as HIV/AIDS, Women’s Rights, LGBT Rights, and Climate Change. The culmination celebration will continue to inspire youth to take a stance on issues they believe in.
Here is a message from host Monique Coleman.

Where: Chicago, Illinois
When: October 14-18, 2011
Apply by: September 30th
The World Student Christian Federation (WSCF) is a global ecumenical federation of Student Christian Movements which seeks to end injustice and oppression by empowering students to be agents of constructive transformation through grass-roots, student-led activism, theological reflection, study and analysis of social and cultural processes, and solidarity and action across the boundaries of culture, ethnicities, sexual and gender identities, and economic situations.
WSCF will be holding their North American Regional Assembly this year on the topic of “Overcoming Violence”. Students from Canada and the United States will analyze why violence is such an all-pervasive element of society and what can be done to overcome it at local, national and international levels. Highlights will include two students from the Middle East Region of the WSCF speaking about their perspective on violence and war in their context, as well as a water pilgrimage to facilitate conversation on water justice.
In addition to theological reflection on the topic, students will engage in lecture-style presentations, workshops, interactive and artistic sessions, as well as experiential learning through supplemental visits, conversation and analysis with local communities and projects on the subject of water justice and how water is a matter of violence and peacemaking.
The conference will begin at 6PM on Friday, October 14th, and conclude at 12PM on Tuesday, October 18th. Early bird registration costs $225, and $275 for late registration. The registration fee covers WSCF membership, room, and board. Participation is open to Unitarian Universalist students.

UUSC-UUA JustWorks Youth Delegation to Haiti – Bon Voyage!
Last modified on 2011-07-19 16:32:36 GMT. 0 comments. Top.
We all felt the pain from the 2010 Haiti earthquake. While we did not feel the tremors or aftershocks, the photos of starving children stared at us from front pages all over the US. In most natural disasters, we might feel affected but it is easy to remain detached; places like Japan or Thailand feel a world away. Both are over six thousand miles away. Yet, when the 7.0 earthquake devastated Haiti, it was close to home. Haiti is only six hundred miles away from Miami. While the cataclysmic earthquake occurred over a year and a half ago, Haitians are still struggling to put their lives back together.

The UUSC-UUA JustWorks Youth Delegation has developed a way for Youth to get involved and help rebuild Haiti. They are taking youth ages 15 to 23 (as well as some adults) to build an eco-village and a sustainable community in Central Plateau, Haiti from August 20 to 27. Participants will construct homes for forty displaced families. They will also instruct citizens on positive, sustainable agriculture habits.
The trip costs four hundred dollars and covers all in-country costs. Participants are to pay for vaccinations and travel to Haiti. The deadline to apply was July 10. We look forward to hearing more about their travels and encourage our Envoys to keep an eye out for similar opportunities for Youth in their congregations.

High Level Meeting on Aids – Youth Activism

During the month of June, the United Nations hosted a High Level Meeting on Aids. One of the side events, entitled “Young People in the Aids Response”, highlighted the importance of youth activism in reaching the United Nations goal of zero new infections by 2015.
Speakers in the meeting stated that youth are the new face Aids activism, through their hard work youth infection rates have dropped by 25%. During the meeting, youth from around the world presented “The Mali Call to Action” a youth driven movement that asks countries and citizens around the world to take a firm stance on HIV/AIDS. The call to action demands countries to: provide protection (male AND female condoms), not to discriminate (on basis of sexual orientation or drugs) and to properly educate. One of the key speakers at the side event was Anthony Lake the new executive director of UNICEF, whose speech demonstrated the progress made by youth by citing changes in the numbers of infections since the release of the 2002 Young People In Crisis document.

International Day of Cooperatives 2011 – Youth
Last modified on 2011-07-05 14:55:25 GMT. 0 comments. Top.
In 1992, General Assembly determined that the first Saturday of July 1995 would be the Internation Day of Cooperatives (IDC). This year, that Saturday falls on July 2. According to the Department of Economic & Social Affairs, a cooperative, or a co-op, is “autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.” Co-ops have the potential to strengthen the ties of a community & bridge the gap between production & distribution of products. This gap enables distributors to raise the price of products when selling them back to the people who made the raw goods. If co-ops close this gap, then the community saves money. They are vital, especially in today’s conglomerate-dominated culture. Co-ops can also act as sources of income & independence for women who otherwise would have to depend on a husband or father.
The theme of IDC this year is “Youth, the future of cooperative enterprise.” The ICA (International Co-operative Alliance) hopes that young people will be made more aware of the advantages of co-ops. Cooperatives can act as templates for young people to begin their own businesses.
Cooperatives are also often based on ethical and democratic values. For examples of co-cops based on Unitarian Universalist values, take a look at the Lucy Stone Cooperative, a Unitarian Universalist housing co-op, HERE, or the UU of Phoenix Early Education Cooperative, HERE.
